Show #41 - CFML vs Java The Great Debate

Shows Add comments

In this show we talk about ColdFusion vs Java.  We discuss the discussion that Dave had with a co-worker on using Java instead of ColdFusion.  We also discuss Dave's recent experience using the ColdBox framework.  We talk briefly on the jQuery Photo Tagger Plugin made by Ben Nadel.  Also discussed is the post about an update from the CFML Advisory Committee.

    Hi Guys,

Couple of thought about the CF vs Java topic

    1)
In the scheme of a whole project, when you take into account project meetings, design, R&D, testing ... and say for arguments sake programming is one third, then saying CF is tree times faster, in effect, in the whole project you are only saving one ninth.

    2)
Given that CF can interface to Java class, have you thought about letting the Java heads do the business layer, and the CF/Flex team does front end?
Win / Win. Best of both worlds

    3)
If you go with point 2, you can continue doing everything in CF, then a project meetings when the Java team says they are still working on it, you can say you have it built in CF (so you can test front end) - and then once and for all, prove CF is faster.

    4)
If you do work with the Java team, I think you will both get a better appreciation of the others technology and be able to work out which technology is the best fit for different parts of a project.

    5)
You could say - holy crap; we need 50 Java developers for this project! How about you let me get 3 juniors and we will teach them CF. Save mega bucks and still finish the project quicker.

I guess we need a list of ColdFusion developers that are for hire.
Shouldn't we, as a community, build something ourselves?
I'm not talking about "Just go to Monster.com or dice.com".
I'm talking about a community resource where we have maybe a grid with people down the left-hand column and topics going across the first row:

    Do you listen to cfhour?
    Do you attend cfmeetup meetings?
Do you have a print subscription to Fusion authority?
Are you subscribed to Ray Camden's blog?
Are you on the house of fusion mailing lists?
    Are you subscribed to cf-orm-dev?
Do you attend face-to-face User Group meetings?
Do you know such-and-such feature of CF9?
What IRC channel(s) do you listen to?
Do you answer questions on stackoverflow?
    Do you know Fusebox
    Do you know ColdBox
    Do you know Mach II
    Do you know Model Glue
    Do you know FW/1

This will show people (newbies and not so newbies) what others are doing.
And of course, if you need someone, you can see who's into what.
